By Russell Phagen, Competitive Shooter and Match Director

Before I get started, I’ll be upfront about a couple things.

XTech Tactical sponsors FAST, and I’ve known Jeremy from XTech for close to a decade. I’ve also been fortunate enough to beta test many of XTech’s products over the years as they’ve evolved through multiple design revisions.

That relationship gives me a unique perspective because I’ve had the opportunity to see these products long before they ever reached the market. More importantly, I’ve had the chance to run them hard in competition, training, and testing across a variety of firearms.

After spending years with these magazines and extensions, there are a few reasons they’ve become some of my favorite Glock-compatible magazine upgrades available today.

What First Got My Attention

Like most shooters, I was initially interested in capacity.

The particular magazines featured in my video are XTech’s Glock-compatible magazines equipped with their extension system, bringing total capacity up to 22 rounds.

Extra capacity is always useful, whether you’re shooting matches, training, or simply spending a day at the range.

What kept my attention, however, wasn’t the extra rounds.

It was the reliability.

Over the years I’ve tested a lot of magazine extensions from a lot of manufacturers. Some work well. Some work most of the time. Others look great on paper but quickly reveal weaknesses once you start putting serious round counts through them.

The XTech design solved one of the biggest issues I’ve seen repeatedly with magazine extensions.

The Hidden Problem Most Shooters Never See

Most shooters don’t spend much time thinking about what happens inside a magazine.

As long as rounds feed correctly, the internal design usually goes unnoticed.

One of the biggest challenges with magazine extensions is the transition point between the factory magazine body and the extension itself.

Many extensions create a small internal ledge where the follower transitions from the magazine body into the extension. Under the right conditions, that transition can create opportunities for the follower to bind or hang up.

I’ve seen it happen with numerous extension designs over the years.

The problem often shows up when magazines stay loaded for long periods, get dropped repeatedly, or simply accumulate wear through heavy use.

When the follower doesn’t move smoothly, reliability can suffer.

Why the XTech Design Works

The feature I appreciate most about the XTech system is its internal sleeve design.

When you disassemble one of these magazines, you’ll notice how the extension mates with the bottom of the magazine body.

Instead of creating an abrupt transition, the internal geometry creates a smooth path for the follower to travel.

It sounds like a small detail, but in my experience it’s one of the biggest reasons these magazines have been so reliable.

Throughout my testing, I’ve seen this design virtually eliminate the follower binding issues I’ve encountered with other extension systems.

As someone who spends a lot of time shooting matches, that’s exactly the kind of engineering detail I appreciate.

Easy Maintenance Matters

Another thing I immediately liked was how simple these extensions are to disassemble.

Competitive shooters tend to be hard on equipment.

Magazines get dropped into dirt, gravel, dust, mud, and whatever else happens to be on the ground that day.

Keeping magazines clean is an important part of maintaining reliability.

The XTech extension design comes apart quickly and easily, allowing me to clean debris out of the magazine body without fighting with stubborn floor plates.

Anyone who’s wrestled with factory Glock floor plates knows exactly why this matters.

Testing Across Multiple Glock Platforms

For this evaluation, I ran these magazines and extensions through a wide variety of Glock-compatible firearms.

The test guns included:

  • Glock 34 Gen 5
  • Glock 45 Gen 5
  • Ruger RXM
  • Nomad Defense Glock-pattern pistol
  • Derya DY9
  • Additional Glock-compatible builds and custom frame combinations

Across those platforms, I was primarily looking for:

  • Reliable feeding
  • Consistent cycling
  • Proper lock-back on empty magazines
  • Overall function

The magazines performed extremely well throughout testing.

Performance in PCCs

I also wanted to see how the magazines performed in several pistol-caliber carbines.

Many shooters today use Glock-pattern magazines across both handguns and carbines, making magazine compatibility increasingly important.

I tested the magazines in multiple PCC configurations, including direct blowback and delayed blowback systems.

Overall performance was excellent.

Every firearm cycled reliably, and the magazines functioned exactly as expected throughout testing.

OEM Magazine Extensions Are Worth Considering

One thing I appreciate about XTech’s product lineup is that shooters aren’t limited to complete magazines.

Some firearms simply prefer OEM Glock magazines because of tolerance differences, aftermarket frames, or other compatibility variables.

In those situations, the XTech extensions can be installed directly onto factory Glock magazines.

I’ve tested both configurations extensively and have had excellent results with the OEM magazine extension setup as well.

That flexibility allows shooters to tailor their setup to their individual firearm without giving up additional capacity.

My Final Thoughts

After years of testing and using these products, my opinion remains largely unchanged.

The best part of the XTech design isn’t the additional capacity.

It isn’t the appearance.

It isn’t even the easy disassembly.

The biggest advantage is that the engineers focused on solving a genuine reliability problem that many shooters don’t even realize exists.

By addressing follower travel and magazine geometry, they created a system that simply works.

As someone who depends on equipment performing correctly when the timer starts, that’s the kind of innovation that matters most to me.

If you’re looking for the best Glock magazine extension or complete magazine system that prioritizes reliability as much as capacity, XTech’s products are well worth a look.

I’ll continue running them in matches, and if you happen to attend a FAST event, there’s a good chance you’ll see some XTech gear on the prize table as well.

I’ll see you on the range.
